    We believe that a good product is not a good product until it solves a customer’s problem. If it does not, it only postpones the problem and your customer will not be satisfied in the long term. This is where the Value Proposition Canvas comes in.


    The Value Proposition Canvas has three sides.

    The Customer Profile in the center allows you to get into your customer’s head and thus clarify their JTBD.

    The Product Value Map on the left helps you describe how you intend to create value for that customer. The ultimate objective is to achieve fit between the Customer Profile and the Product Value Map. You have achieved that fit once the product solves a clear Job-to-be-Done.

    The Substitutes section outlines what people are currently using to solve their Job-to-be-Done and identifies inertias that might prevent them from switching, even if your solution is superior. most organizations struggle to understand the alternative solutions well enough. Gaining a customer means not only serving their need but overcoming their resistance to trying something new.

    What is the goal of the model?

    That’s easy: A happy customer. Because a happy customer will make you happy. But this can only achieved by a process of thinking customer centric and iterating this view over and over again. The goal of using this model is to support you at understanding your customers’ Jobs-to-be-done and connecting those to your business.
